Federal Government’s Plan to Boost Agriculture: Satellite Seed Labs in Every State.

Published on

The Federal Government has unveiled its strategy to establish satellite seed testing laboratories across all 36 states in the country. This initiative aims to provide farmers with improved access to quality, certified seeds, ultimately leading to increased agricultural yields.

Bulus Sule, the Director of Seeds Inspectorate at the National Agricultural Seeds Council, emphasized the government’s commitment through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. ” The goal is to ensure Nigerian farmers can easily acquire and cultivate high-quality seeds, translating to better harvests and substantial earnings.”

Speaking during a South-West stakeholders’ sensitization workshop in Ado Ekiti, Sule stressed the importance of utilizing certified seeds for planting.

“This practice can result in a nearly 60% boost in production per hectare, which could reach up to 100% when combined with other inputs.”

The introduction of satellite laboratories in various states is expected to bring seed testing closer to farmers, particularly those in rural areas. This accessibility will help ensure that the seeds they plant meet rigorous quality standards, leading to successful harvests.

Sule also highlighted the potential economic impact of improved agricultural production. He noted that the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) in the agriculture sector could experience significant growth.

Over time, the number of seed-producing agencies accredited by the council has grown from 74 to more than 314, thanks to interventions such as intensive campaigns. This upward trend suggests a promising future for Nigeria’s agricultural economy.
