On December 10, 2024, France reaffirmed its commitment to human rights in observance of Human Rights Day, emphasizing the critical importance of protecting women’s rights and combating online gender-based violence.

The French government highlighted its dedication to the principles enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted in Paris on this day in 1948.

In recognition of Human Rights Day, various events were organized across the country, including a significant gathering where the “Liberté-Égalité-Fraternité” Human Rights Prize and the Franco-German Prize for Human Rights and the Rule of Law were awarded to individuals from around the globe who have made notable contributions to human rights advocacy.

These awards aim to honor, those who risk their lives and freedom in the fight for justice and equality.

French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot met with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk to discuss ongoing efforts to enhance women’s rights.

The meeting underscored the need for robust actions against violence directed at women and girls, particularly in digital spaces. This initiative aligns with a resolution introduced by France and the Netherlands at the UN General Assembly aimed at addressing online gender-based violence.

The French government reiterated that the protection of human rights is essential not only for individual dignity but also for fostering peace and stability within society.

As part of its commitment, France is actively working on initiatives designed to combat violence against women, ensuring that these issues remain at the forefront of national and international discussions.

As celebrations continue, France remains dedicated to advocating for human rights globally, reinforcing its role as a leader in promoting justice and equality for all.
