German President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier to visit Nigeria Tuesday

Germany’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is scheduled to visit Nigeria on December 10 for a three-day official trip, which will conclude on December 12, 2024.

The planned visit was made known in a press release issued by the German Embassy in Abuja on Monday.

Steinmeier, during his visit, will hold discussions with several key Nigerian figures, including President Bola Tinubu and Dr. Alieu Touray, President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission.

In Abuja, he will focus on enhancing bilateral relations with Nigerian officials. Following this, he will travel to Lagos, where he plans to engage with business leaders, visit a start-up hub, and meet with prominent individuals from Nigeria’s cultural and civil society sectors, such as artist Dr. Nike Okundaye and Nobel Prize-winning author Prof. Wole Soyinka.

Steinmeier will also take a tour of Lagos to better understand the challenges and opportunities involved in the urban development of Africa’s largest city. He will be accompanied by a delegation of German business leaders.

The statement announcing the visit reads “The President of the Federal Republic of Germany, His Excellency Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier is set to arrive in Nigeria tomorrow, 10 December. He will stay until the 12th of December 2024.
“While in Abuja, President Steinmeier will meet with the President of Nigeria, His Excellency Bola Tinubu, as well as with the President of the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States, His Excellency Dr. Alieu Touray.
“The German President will then proceed to Lagos, where he will engage with business representatives, visit a start-up hub, and meet with members of Nigeria’s culture sector and civil society, like Dr. Nike Okundaye, popularly known as Mama Nike of the Nike Art Gallery, and the legendary author and Nobel Laureate for Literature, Prof. Wole Soyinka.
“There will also be an opportunity to tour the city of Lagos and gain insights into the urban development of a megacity, including environmental and social challenges. President Steinmeier will be accompanied by a business delegation of CEOs and high-ranking board members of some of Germany’s most successful companies in the fields of IT, high-tech, and energy – an indication of the rising interest of German businesses in opportunities to invest in Nigeria.”
