Late on Wednesday night, the Ishieke Police Division in Ebonyi local government area of Ebonyi State was targeted in a heavy attack carried out by unidentified gunmen.
In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, reports indicate that five of the assailants were killed by the police forces.
Eyewitness Mr. Tony Nwori recounted that the attackers arrived at the police station in two vehicles, opening fire indiscriminately upon their arrival.
For over half an hour, the gunmen clashed with the on-duty police officers stationed outside the premises before additional security personnel arrived to provide support.
The escalating situation prompted a swift response from various security agencies, including the Army, who swiftly mobilized to track down the criminals.
According to a source, the assailants persisted in firing shots into the air as they fled towards the Odomoke Ishieke market along Nwiboko Obodo road in Ebonyi Council Area.
Despite multiple attempts to verify the incident through the Police Public Relations Officer, Joshua Ukandu, his phone was unreachable, and there has been no reply to text messages as of the time of reporting.
A video circulating online depicted some of the suspected perpetrators who were fatally shot during the encounter.
