“I used to think singing was for weak people”– Victony

Nigerian musician, Anthony Victor, widely known as Victony, has opened up about his initial decision to pursue a career as a rapper instead of a singer, despite being aware of his singing talent.

According to Victony, he initially viewed singing as something only meant for “weak individuals” and believed that rapping was a more superior form of expression. However, he eventually had a change of heart and made the transition from rapping to singing in 2020.

During a recent episode of the Zero Conditions podcast, Victony revealed that 2020 marked the beginning of his foray into the Afrobeats genre. His track, “Soweto,” was one of his early attempts at exploring this new musical direction.

“Honestly, I used to know I could sing but I just refused to. Because I just felt like it was for weak people. I felt like it was an escape for weak people.

“I always loved that rapper energy and I wanted to be a rapper. But when I started singing, I realised that it is just as technical as rapping.”
