Segun Sowunmi, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), expressed his disappointment at the inaction of the party’s founding fathers as it faces internal turmoil. He observed that the party is suffering while its leaders stand by.
In a recent development, some PDP members in the House of Representatives have called for the resignation of the party’s National Chairman, Umar Damagum. They accuse him of being loyal to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Led by Ikenga UgoChinyere and consisting of approximately 60 lawmakers, a group within the PDP has raised concerns about the party leadership’s lack of response to the political events in Rivers State.
They specifically criticized the leaders for remaining silent while President Bola Tinubu from the APC intervened.
Sowunmi tied the demands for Damagum to step down and the overall internal tensions in the party leadership to what he described as the “Wike issue.”
The former Ogun PDP gubernatorial candidate expressed his disappointment that the PDP had successfully navigated difficulties created by the former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, prior to the last general elections. However, he noted that similar challenges continue to plague the party even a year after the elections.
“A 25-year-old institution is supposed to be one of the legacies that one of the most populous black nations will tell the world that we can also run this thing,” he said.
“I’m disappointed that the founding fathers, the Jonathans of this world, the Obasanjos of this world and co, I am disappointed that they are looking at the platform that gave them the opportunity to lead, I am disappointed that they are looking it bleed.”
