Lagos Assembly: Obasa Holds Reconciliation Meeting with Meranda and Other Legislators.

Published on

Mudashiru Obasa, the recently re-elected Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, is currently engaged in a closed-door reconciliation meeting with 39 lawmakers.

Taking place at the Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja, the meeting began around 2:10 PM and included Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda.

The primary goal is to unify the discontented lawmakers and ease tensions, while also establishing a new direction for the assembly.

As a result of this meeting, it appears that Obasa could avoid resigning from his position, contrary to widespread public speculation.

As of 3:45 PM, the crucial meeting was still in progress. Reports indicate that Obasa is likely to withdraw the lawsuit he filed against the House and 33 lawmakers at Ikeja Court concerning his removal as speaker.

To recap, on an unprecedented day this past Monday, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly re-elected the controversial ex-speaker, Obasa, after Meranda, the then-incumbent, submitted her resignation.

The re-elections occurred among the 40 members of the legislative assembly following significant interventions by the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership at both the national and state levels.

Obasa was ousted by 33 of the 39 members of the House on January 13, 2025, and was succeeded by his former deputy, Meranda.

This turn of events created substantial conflict, leaving the assembly and the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the apex decision-making body of the APC in the state, as well as party supporters and loyalists, in disarray, prompting President Bola Tinubu to establish a high-level national committee led by Chief Bisi Akande and Aremo Segun Osoba, among others, to facilitate a resolution.
