The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced that it will be fielding consensus candidates for chairmanship and councillorship positions in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for July 12.
The party has fixed its primaries for Saturday, May 17, to be held at all local government secretariats across the state.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday, Hakeem Olalemi, the PDP Vice Chairman for the Central district, stated that candidates would be selected based on stakeholder agreements in each council area.
Olalemi expressed strong confidence in the party’s prospects, saying, “We are optimistic about our chances in the local government elections. We expect a fair and credible process.”
He acknowledged the ruling party’s influence over the state electoral commission but affirmed the PDP’s readiness to contest.
“We are aware of the APC’s control over the electoral body, but we are prepared to challenge them. By God’s grace, we aim to win. We are fully ready on all fronts,” Olalemi added.
Also commenting, Lagos PDP Chairman Phillips Aivoji expressed optimism about the party’s performance in the election.
“We are in this race to win and will keep mobilizing public support for the PDP. We have strong prospects in several areas and are ready to compete wherever necessary,” he said.
Aivoji assured residents that a PDP-led administration would deliver effective and people-focused governance.
“With the PDP in charge, Lagosians can expect purposeful leadership and good governance. The welfare of the people will be our top priority,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) conducted its primaries the previous Saturday to select its candidates for the upcoming polls.
