Local government polls in Abia State commence as the Assembly affirms members of ABSIEC.

The Abia State legislative assembly has conducted the screening and approval of nominees for the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) following the submission by Governor Alex Otti.

During the session, Deputy Speaker Mr. Augustine Okezie, presiding over the proceedings, announced the confirmation of Professor George Chima as the Chairman-designate, along with Dr. Kelechi Okere, Joseph Uzoma Akara, Nkemdirim Kalu, and Bertha Ehumadu as members of the state electoral body.

The Deputy Speaker noted that the remaining nominees, Ekele Queen Ahuchogu and Onyemauche Elekwe, were absent and would undergo screening on a later occasion when they appear before the House.

Furthermore, the legislative body screened and approved the nomination of Mrs. Eke Ngozi Ogbonnaya-Ugwo as the Auditor General of Abia State, as proposed by Governor Otti.

During the plenary session, the Assembly also passed the Abia State 2024 Appropriation Virement Bill, 2024 (H.A.B.21) into law.

This legislation seeks to reallocate the sum of N171,074,664,965.00 within the 2024 Abia State Budget Appropriation Law for the operational needs of the state government until the end of the fiscal year on December 31, 2024, and for other relevant expenditures.
