Methodist prelate dies at 86

The Prelate Emeritus of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, Dr Sunday Mbang, has died at the age of 86.

The Conference Secretary of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, Rt. Rev. Babatunde Taiwo, in an announcement, said Mbang died on Wednesday.

Mourning the deceased, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said Mbang displayed exemplary courage, forthrightness, wisdom, intellectualism and selflessness during his service to God and humanity.



He said, “I commiserate with all Methodists in Nigeria and the Diaspora, on the passing of His Eminence, Prelate Emeritus, Methodist Church Nigeria, Dr. Sunday Coffie Mbang.

“Heartfelt condolences particularly to the Mbang family, and also the Government and people of Akwa Ibom State.

“The late Prelate Emeritus Mbang was indeed a spiritual colossus at home and abroad: the longest-serving Leader, Methodist Church Nigeria; first Methodist President, Christian Association of Nigeria; first Black President, World Methodist Council, among other pioneering positions.

Dr Mbang displayed, in his over six decades of service to God and humanity, exemplary courage, forthrightness, wisdom, intellectualism and selflessness.”
