Minimum Wage: Sokoto LG staff, Primary school teachers to benefit – NLC chairman

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Sokoto State Chapter has assured local government staff and primary school teachers in the state that they will benefit from the approved ₦70,000 national minimum wage being implemented by the Sokoto State Government.

The assurance was given by the state NLC Chairman, Comrade Abdullahi Aliyu (Jungle), during a briefing with journalists following the union’s state executive meeting held at the NLC secretariat in Sokoto on Saturday.

“What we signed at the end of our negotiations with officials of the state government is a minimum wage for state and local government staff, which the NLC believes includes teachers at the Local Government Education Authority (LGEA).

“If the current economic condition of the state improves, we will still approach the government to consider paying arrears for the past months,” he stated.

Comrade Jungle emphasized that the implementation of the new national minimum wage resulted from an agreement between the state government and the NLC leadership.

“We agreed, and we are fully in support of the approved ₦70,000 minimum wage by the state government, effective January 2025.

“The state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress has suspended its proposed strike action related to the non-implementation of the approved national minimum wage.”

He added that the NLC would work with the state government to ensure that only genuine civil servants benefit from the new wage, even if it requires conducting a verification and screening exercise across the workforce.

Comrade Jungle urged civil servants in the state to remain patient, expressing hope that the government would introduce additional welfare packages to improve their well-being.This development follows the establishment of committees by 17 state governors, including Sokoto, to implement the new ₦70,000 minimum wage for workers in their respective states. We are satisfied with the agreement reached for the implementation of the ₦70,000 national minimum wage,” he said.

The NLC Chairman also commended the state government’s negotiation team for their patience and tolerance during the discussions.

“The organized labour worked tirelessly to ensure that the interests of workers were adequately protected. I hope the agreement reached will contribute to the overall development of the state,” he noted.

He further assured that the union would continue to collaborate with the government to ensure the smooth implementation of the wage increase.
