On January 15, 2025, Nigeria observed its annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day, a solemn occasion dedicated to honoring the sacrifices made by military personnel throughout the nation’s history.

The central ceremony took place at the National Arcade in Abuja, where President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, led the wreath-laying ceremony alongside other dignitaries, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Chief Justice of Nigeria Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.

Armed Forces Remembrance Day serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery and dedication of Nigeria’s armed forces, commemorating those who have laid down their lives in defense of the country’s sovereignty.

The date was shifted to January 15 to mark the end of the Nigerian Civil War in 1970, underscoring its importance in promoting national unity.

The ceremony included traditional military honors such as the Last Post, a minute’s silence, and the release of white pigeons symbolizing peace.

Vice President Shettima emphasized the nation’s gratitude towards its military personnel, stating, This is really an occasion that calls for prayer, unity, and for those living members of the Armed Forces to know that they will be remembered when they fall.

In his address, President Tinubu highlighted the importance of national unity and the sacrifices made by the armed forces. He urged Nigerians to eschew violence and divisive tendencies for a peaceful and prosperous nation.

Senate President Akpabio reiterated the legislative body’s commitment to supporting the armed forces, commending their selfless sacrifices.

Similar ceremonies were held across various states, with governors and local officials paying respects at cenotaphs and memorials. In Zamfara State, Governor Dauda Lawal promised enhanced welfare for families of fallen heroes, donating ₦20 million to support veterans and their families.

The 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day not only served as a tribute to those who have sacrificed their lives for Nigeria but also highlighted the ongoing need for national support for military personnel and their families.

As white pigeons were released into the skies, they symbolized Nigeria’s enduring hope for lasting peace and unity, reinforcing the collective responsibility to honor those who have defended the nation.
