In a thrilling encounter at the ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers in Kigali, the Nigerian women’s cricket team achieved a hard-fought victory over Zimbabwe, securing a dramatic one-wicket win. This victory marks a significant step toward Nigeria’s goal of qualifying for the 2025 ICC U-19 Women’s World Cup in Malaysia.
Zimbabwe won the toss and opted to bat first, but their innings were quickly stifled by Nigeria’s formidable bowling attack. Peace Usen set the tone early by taking three wickets for just 16 runs in her four overs, while Lillian Ude, who was named Player of the Match in the previous game, continued her outstanding form with another three wickets, bringing her tournament total to eight.

Anointed Akhigbe also contributed significantly with three wickets, helping to restrict Zimbabwe to a modest total of 77 runs in 19.4 over. In response, Nigeria faced a challenging chase against Zimbabwe’s experienced bowlers. Only Omosigho Eguakun (15 runs) and Peculiar Agboya (13 runs) managed to reach double digits as wickets fell at regular intervals. The match came down to a nail-biting finish, with Nigeria needing one run off the final ball. Usen held her nerve and scored the decisive run, sealing the victory at 78/9 after 20 overs.
This victory places Nigeria at the top of Group B with two wins, while Zimbabwe and Tanzania each have one win. The Nigerian team is now poised for their next match against Malawi, who currently sit at the bottom of the table. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals, with Nigeria aiming to secure one of those coveted spots for the World Cup.

The team’s performance has been commendable, showcasing resilience and determination against formidable opponents. As they prepare for their upcoming matches, the Nigerian women’s cricket team continues to inspire hope for their supporters as they strive for success on the international stage.
