Nigerian Senators Clash Over Regional Government Proposal

Published on

Nigerian senators from southern and northern regions expressed differing views on returning to a regional system of government during a two-day retreat on constitutional amendments.

Southern senators see regional government as a solution to economic, insecurity, and infrastructure issues, while northern senators vehemently oppose it, citing lack of development during the First Republic.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele clarified that regionalism is not part of the ongoing constitution review. Senators Abdul Ningi and Sani Musa argued against regionalism, advocating for reform of the current federal structure and fiscal federalism.

In contrast, Senator Abdulfatai Buhari supported regional government, highlighting its potential for resource harnessing and reduced corruption. The debate reflects ongoing discussions on Nigeria’s governance structure and constitutional reform.
