Nigerian singer Simi has expressed her solidarity with the ongoing protests in Kenya against tax increases. The demonstrations, dubbed ‘RejectFinanceBill2024,’ have seen Kenyan youths take to the streets to voice their opposition to the proposed tax hikes.
Unfortunately, the protests turned violent on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of five individuals and injuries to many more after police clashed with demonstrators outside the parliament building in Nairobi, according to reports from Amnesty Kenya.
Simi took to her social media handle on Tuesday evening to show her support for the protesters, acknowledging the poignant scene of people fighting and sacrificing their lives for their rights and freedoms.
Her statement highlights the resilience and determination of the Kenyan people in their quest for economic justice and democratic governance.
She wrote,
“I stand with the people of Kenya. It is both powerful and heartbreaking for a people to have to fight and die for freedoms and rights. Godspeed and Strength. [Hash tag] RejectFinanceBill2024.”
“Wow. When you’ve had enough, the fight is almost inevitable.
