Authorities in Nigeria have arrested two men accused of attempting to extort an Australian teenager by threatening to release compromising photos of him online.
The alleged “sextortion” scam led to the boy taking his own life. The suspects, who had been engaging with the teenager online, threatened to release personal photos of him unless he paid them Aus$500 ($330).
Collaborating with law enforcement in South Africa and Nigeria, Australian authorities located the two men in a Nigerian slum.
Under Nigerian law, local authorities can prosecute for crimes committed overseas. The arrest serves as a reminder that sextortion is a transnational crime.
