In a move to ensure a smooth transition of power, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has called on senator Monday Okpebholo, the governor-elect, to establish a transition team.
With only thirty days left in his tenure, Obaseki emphasized the importance of collaboration between the incoming and outgoing administrations.
Joseph Eboigbe, the Secretary to the State Government, conveyed this request in a statement issued in Benin City on Sunday. Obaseki’s term concludes on November 12, 2024, after serving two consecutive terms.
Senator Okpebholo, the candidate from the All Progressives Congress (APC), won the governorship election held on September 21, 2024, with a total of 291,667 votes, surpassing 17 other candidates, including his closest rival from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Asue Ighodalo, who secured 247,274 votes.
In a letter dated October 10, 2024, Eboigbe encouraged Okpebholo and his party to promptly form their transition team, allowing both teams to engage in vital discussions and share essential information for a seamless handover of responsibilities.
An inaugural meeting for both transition committees is slated for October 14, 2024.
Eboigbe expressed the outgoing administration’s commitment to supporting Okpebholo’s team in making the transition effective and efficient.
As of now, there has been no response to the letter, which was received by the APC’s administrative secretary, Mr. Joy Oyere.
Earlier, in July 2024, Obaseki had set up a 20-member transition committee, led by Eboigbe, to facilitate an orderly transfer of power and knowledge to the incoming administration.
