“PDP’s Focus Shifts: Elections Preparation Takes Center Stage Over Leadership Change”

Published on

In response to recent media speculations about potential changes in leadership, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has firmly stated that there are currently no intentions to replace the party’s Acting National Chairman, Amb Umar Damagum.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, spoke exclusively in a telephone conversation, reaffirming the party’s stance.

These clarifications emerged amid reports suggesting internal maneuvers for the substantive National Chairman position within the PDP. Amb Damagum stepped into the role of Acting Chairman after the suspension of then Chairman, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, from the PDP due to actions taken by his Igyorov Council Ward in Gboko Local Government Area on March 26.

This development was subsequently upheld by a Benue High Court in Makurdi on June 2.Ologunagba refuted the notion of an ongoing scramble for the chairman’s position and underscored that the replacement of Damagum was not a current priority for the PDP.

He emphasized that the party’s leadership and key stakeholders are dedicating their efforts towards the preparation of off-season governorship elections in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa states, all scheduled for November 11.

The party spokesperson explained, “Our focus is firmly directed towards the upcoming governorship elections in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa states.

Thus, discussions about replacing the chairman are not part of our agenda at this juncture.”Furthermore, Ologunagba pointed out the ongoing election petition matter before the presidential election tribunal.

He stressed that until this matter is resolved, discussions about a potential chairman replacement would be premature.

As the PDP stands resolute in its commitment to provide strong leadership, Ologunagba highlighted the party’s continuous efforts towards reconciliation.

He mentioned that essential dialogues are still underway among crucial party organs to address internal matters and foster unity.
