Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the withholding of pensions and gratuities for senior citizens, labeling it a form of wickedness during their most vulnerable years.
He expressed his concerns after a distressing encounter with an elderly woman during his visit to Shanahan College of Nursing Sciences in Nsukka, Enugu State.
Obi criticized the greed and relentless pursuit of material wealth among political leaders, which he believes have led to suffering for many citizens who are deprived of their hard-earned benefits.
He shared the story of a retired civil servant who had not received her pension payments, despite having dedicated her career to serving the nation.
The woman, facing health issues and unable to afford basic necessities, represented many others in similar circumstances.
In a heartfelt message on his X account, Obi reflected on the insensitivity of Nigeria’s political leadership.
He emphasized the importance of compassion and the need for leaders to ensure that citizens receive their deserved rewards for their contributions to the nation.
As governor of Anambra State, he mentioned having addressed over N30 billion in outstanding pensions and gratuities because he understood the challenges faced by elderly citizens.
Obi promised to provide immediate support to the woman and vowed to advocate for others suffering in silence across the country, asserting that a better Nigeria is achievable for all.
