Rising Tensions in Rivers State as Governor Fubara Faces Opposition from Wike Faction Amid Calls for Caution

Published on

In Rivers State, tensions are escalating as Governor Siminalayi Fubara faces significant opposition from factions within his own party, particularly from former governor Nyesom Wike.

The political landscape has become increasingly volatile, prompting the Rivers State House of Assembly to call for caution amid fears of potential violence stemming from these internal conflicts.
The discord has intensified following a seven-day ultimatum issued by pro-Wike lawmakers within the Rivers State House of Assembly, demanding that Governor Fubara re-present the 2024 budget.

This ultimatum comes despite the budget having already been passed and signed into law by Fubara. The situation has raised alarms among party leaders and citizens alike, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) urging members to refrain from actions that could disrupt governance and peace in the state.

In a statement, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, emphasized that these lawmakers are no longer recognized as members of the Assembly due to their defection from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He warned that their actions could undermine democracy and stability in Rivers State.
The Rivers State House of Assembly has echoed these sentiments, urging all parties involved to exercise restraint. The leadership is concerned that escalating tensions could lead to violence, which would not only destabilize Rivers State but also have repercussions for the broader political climate in Nigeria.
The ongoing power struggle between Wike and Fubara is seen as a critical test for the PDP in Rivers State. Observers note that this conflict may affect future elections and governance in the region.

The Ijaw National Congress has even called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and address the situation before it spirals further out of control. As the political crisis unfolds, all eyes are on Rivers State, where the balance of power within the PDP is at stake and where calls for unity and peace are becoming increasingly urgent.
