The Rivers State House of Assembly has directed the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to proceed with local government elections despite ongoing political tensions in the state.
This decision comes amid significant criticism faced by Governor Siminalayi Fubara from factions within his party, particularly from former Governor Nyesom Wike, who has openly challenged Fubara’s leadership.
The local government elections, scheduled for October 5, 2024, have been a focal point of political strife in Rivers State. Tensions escalated as Wike, who previously served as governor and is now a minister in the APC-led federal government, attempted to mobilize opposition against the elections. Wike’s supporters staged protests, claiming that the electoral process was flawed and calling for its cancellation.
Despite these challenges, RSIEC chairperson Justice Adolphus Enebeli confirmed that the commission would move forward with the elections, emphasizing the importance of adhering to a Supreme Court ruling mandating that local governments must be democratically elected. This decision is not only a constitutional obligation but also a vital step to ensure that the voices of the people are heard, Enebeli stated.
Governor Fubara has defended his administration’s decision to hold the elections, asserting that failure to do so would disregard the Supreme Court’s directive. He remarked,The Supreme Court ruling effectively prohibits the administration of local government councils by unelected officials. Fubara’s administration has faced backlash from Wike’s faction within the PDP, which opted to boycott the elections altogether.
As election day approaches, there are concerns about potential disruptions.
The police had previously withdrawn security for the elections due to a Federal High Court order, raising fears about voter safety and electoral integrity. However, Enebeli assured that measures were in place to conduct a peaceful and transparent election.
The outcome of these elections will be crucial not only for local governance in Rivers State but also for the political future of Governor Fubara and his relationship with Wike. With various political factions vying for control, the results could significantly impact the balance of power in the state and shape its political landscape moving forward.
