Toke Makinwa has spoken out against the opportunistic individuals who are taking advantage of the nationwide protests in Nigeria to engage in destructive behavior and vandalism.
As the protests against economic hardship continue, reports have surfaced of hoodlums looting properties belonging to Nigerians who are also affected by the economic struggles.
Makinwa emphasized that the victims of these criminal acts are not the enemy, but rather fellow citizens facing similar challenges. She later clarified that her initial statement was not intended to suggest that the protesters were behind the looting and vandalism.
She wrote;
“I did not say the stealing and vandalism was done by protesters, the people who have their things stolen are Nigerians too, going through the same hardship. What have they done to deserve this?”
“Destroying properties and stealing from your fellow Nigerians who are passing through the same hardship is not right at all. This is very sad”.
