Abuja, Nigeria President Bola Tinubu has signed into law the bill establishing the Federal University of Environmental Technology in Ogoni, Rivers State.

The move is being hailed as a significant step towards addressing historical grievances, promoting environmental justice, and fostering sustainable development in the oil-rich Niger Delta region.

President Tinubu signed the bill on Monday in Abuja, in the presence of key government officials and an Ogoni delegation.

He emphasized that the establishment of the university demonstrates his administration’s commitment to the Ogoni people, who have long suffered from environmental degradation.

Today marks a significant milestone in our national journey towards environmental justice, education, and sustainable development, President Tinubu stated.

The Ogoni have been at the forefront of our development and agitation and have suffered enough environmental degradation.

The university, to be located in Taipei, will prioritize interdisciplinary programs in environmental science, clean energy, and sustainable technology.

It aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to tackle regional and national ecological issues and drive sustainable economic development.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, noted that the university will serve as a center of excellence in addressing environmental challenges.

National Security Advisor Nuhu Ribadu expressed hope that the institution would contribute to the restoration of Ogoniland and promote inclusive development and environmental sustainability.

Senator Mpigi Barinada, leader of the Ogoni delegation, thanked President Tinubu for approving the university, calling it a beacon of hope for the Ogoni community and an encouragement to embrace peace.

The approval follows a recent meeting between President Tinubu and Ogoni leaders, where discussions centered on the Niger Delta cleanup project and political tensions in Rivers State.

The establishment of the university is seen as a direct outcome of these deliberations, signaling Tinubu’s resolve to address the concerns of the Ogoni people.
