South African songstress Tyla stole the spotlight at the 30th MTV Europe Music Awards in Manchester, UK, on Sunday, securing three prestigious accolades. She outshone Nigerian music sensations Asake, Tems, Rema, Burna Boy, and Ayra Starr to claim the Outstanding Afrobeats Artiste award.
Tyla also garnered the Top African Talent honor, edging out Ayra Starr, Asake, DBN Gogo, TitoM & Yuppe, and Diamond Platnumz. Her third triumph came in the form of the Exceptional R&B Artiste award, surpassing American music icons Kehlani, SZA, Tinashe, Usher, and Victoria Monét.
Tyla capped off the evening with a captivating acoustic rendition of her hit single ‘Water.’ Conversely, Nigerian songstress Ayra Starr fell short in all four of her nominated categories: Top African Talent, Emerging Artiste, Outstanding Afrobeats Artiste, and Breakthrough Act.
Earlier this year, Tyla surpassed Nigerian artists to claim the inaugural Best African Music Performance category at the Grammys. She also secured the Outstanding Afrobeats Artiste award at the 2024 MTV Music Video Awards.
