The leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Abia State and their candidate for the 2023 governorship elections, Ukpai Iro Ukpai, along with his running mate Chiedozie Josiah, have announced their resignation from the party to join the Labour Party (LP).

The announcement took place at Governor Alex Otti’s residence in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South LGA of Abia on Saturday. In addition, several prominent NNPP members, including David Urum and other former candidates from the 2023 elections, also made the switch to the LP during this event.

Explaining their decision to leave NNPP, Ukpai cited the impressive development initiatives under Governor Otti’s Labour Party administration as a motivating factor. The newly inducted members were officially welcomed to the LP with the presentation of party flags.

However, in response to this development, Mr. Bright Ulonwa, a senior member of NNPP in Abia, stated that the party would remain robust despite the departures. “The exit of a small group of individuals will not undermine the party’s foundation in Abia State; we expect to emerge even stronger,” Ulonwa remarked.
