The United Nations Security Council convened on October 2, 2024, to address the escalating tensions following Iran’s missile attack on Israel, which involved approximately 181 ballistic missiles targeting various military installations. This unprecedented assault prompted air raid sirens across Israel, forcing millions into bomb shelters.

While Israel’s advanced missile defense systems, including the Iron Dome, intercepted many of the missiles, some did penetrate defenses, causing minor injuries and damage.U.S. President Joe Biden expressed strong disapproval of any potential retaliatory strikes by Israel on Iranian nuclear facilities.

During a press briefing, he emphasized the importance of consultation with Israeli officials regarding their next steps in response to the missile barrage. Biden reiterated the U.S. commitment to supporting Israel and indicated that military discussions were ongoing to determine an appropriate response.

The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for the attack, framing it as retaliation for recent Israeli military operations that resulted in the deaths of key figures from Hezbollah and Hamas.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the attack as a “grave error” and warned that Iran would face consequences. The Security Council’s meeting reflects growing international concern about the potential for a broader regional conflict, as both Iran and Israel have exchanged threats of further military action.

The situation remains tense, with calls for diplomatic solutions becoming increasingly urgent amid fears of escalation into a full-scale war in the Middle East.
