Protesters from the Edo State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) were attacked by an angry mob, believed to be supporters of LP National Chairman Julius Abure. The incident took place at the LP’s national secretariat in Abuja, where the protesters had gathered to demand Abure’s removal.
The trouble began when the anti-Abure protesters arrived at the party headquarters in several vehicles. They carried placards and chanted solidarity songs to express their disapproval.
As some of the protesters exited one of the vehicles, the alleged thugs swiftly attacked, using sticks and other objects to damage the vehicles and intimidate the drivers into leaving.
Fortunately, the situation was brought under control by the intervention of armed police officers and Department of State Security (DSS) operatives.
The security personnel stepped in when the thugs began to hurl stones towards the nearby Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, resulting in journalists being chased away.
The presence of the security officials effectively prevented the situation from escalating further.
