Nigerian comedian and actor Woli Arole has voiced criticism of the growing trend among some women, described as ‘woke,’ who choose surrogacy despite having no fertility issues. This conversation gained traction after popular media personality Ife revealed on her Instagram that she is opting for surrogacy to have her babies, despite being medically capable of carrying a child, citing a desire to avoid the physical stress of pregnancy.
Responding to the controversy, Woli Arole took to Instagram on Tuesday to emphasize that carrying a child in the womb is a divine blessing ordained by God. He acknowledged that surrogacy, IVF, and other assisted reproductive technologies are valid options for women facing medical challenges but cautioned against choosing surrogacy purely for convenience or personal preference.
In his post, the comedian urged people not to let modern ‘wokeness’ influence decisions about childbirth in ways that disregard traditional or religious beliefs. He wrote, “Listen carefully. It is a blessing for a woman to carry her baby in her womb. That’s how God wants it. Don’t let wokeness derail you. Unless for medical reasons, she can adopt options like surrogacy, IVF and all.”
He further stressed, “You can’t say ‘my body, my decision,’ or ‘I don’t feel like carrying a child, I want surrogacy.’ No! Your body is God’s temple! Surrogacy is not something you just choose! There’s a reason God gave you a womb.”
Woli Arole’s remarks highlight ongoing debates in Nigerian society about modern reproductive choices, faith, and cultural values, sparking discussions about the balance between personal autonomy and religious convictions.
